  • Quietway 2 - consultation on proposals for Guilford and Calthorpe Streets

    At the S4C ride last May we heard Andrew Gilligan mention that QW 38 from Bloomsbury via Islington to Hackney would have priority. This route is now named QW 2!

    QW2 is shown as a turquoise line labelled "Possible Bloomsbury to Walthamstow Quietway".

    Camden Council is now consulting on some minor measures they propose for improving the stretch in Camden along Calthorpe Street and Guilford Street. These can be seen at:

    To summarise specific (from west to east):

    - a new length of cycle lane into Bernard Street from Russell Square

    - raised zebra crossing over Guilford Street at Queen Anne’s Walk

    - raised table at the junction of Guilford Street and Grenville Street

    - a large raised table on Guilford Street across Guilford Place (that will also enhance the N-S route down Judd Street and Hunter Street on to Lambs Conduit Street and Red Lion Street)

    - between Phoenix Place and Farringdon Road, reallocate some carriageway space for cycle lanes

    general changes will include:

    - cycle symbols and signage

    - replace granite setts on raised areas with asphalt.

  • The TfL North-South cycle superhighway consultation

    Full details of the consultation are at:

    closing date for comments is 19 October 2014.

    Camden Cyclists we propose to send a response to this consultation on behalf of our members. This will focus only on the part within Camden (the section between Charterhouse Street and Euston Road - as detailed on the map attached). But note that the alignment of the route north of Greville Street is not agreed between Camden and TfL and is not formally considered a part of the consultation.

    So it makes sense to have two discussion threads for the sections in Camden south and north of Greville Street.

  • Cycling on Camden Road

    TfL officers told us last November that they have a project to improving conditions for cyclists on Camden Road. This would include "investigating the feasibility of a northbound mandatory cycle lane; a wide bus and cycle lane southbound and the removal of two- lane flares at junctions". They assumed a 12m road width, suggesting 6m for a pair of general traffic lanes together with a 2m cycle lane and 4 m bus +cycle lane.

    They are now inviting CCC to a meeting to discuss cycling on the TLRN in Camden, and also take the opportunity to walk along Camden Rd to further discuss the corridor scheme they’re progressing. On further enquiry they said:
    "We would prefer to take the opportunity to engage with CCC as an independent stakeholder, separate from LB Camden, in order to fully understand the campaign’s ambitions for the TLRN."

    So....
    1. Let's clarify what we would want on Camden Road (without taking on TfL's assumption that there must be a bus lane. And being realistic as to what might fit in at a junction. The above photo shows a potential left hook situation.

    2. Can I have volunteers to join me on this walk/talk.

  • King's Cross Junction consultation 2014

    Note: the most significant place in this proposal is the Gray's Inn Road/York Way route, where Deep Lee was killed in 2011.

    Drop-in sessions: 4 and 11 March 2014
    Time: 16:30 – 19:00
    Venue: King’s Cross Neighbourhood Centre, 51 Argyle Street

    CCC were consulted in advance and do not like the proposals. Our main objections are that these proposals:
    1. fail to meet TfL’s own 2005 Cycle Design Standards, on many points,
    2. put cyclists on the pavement at an extremely pedestrian-busy junction,
    3. fail to narrow the traffic heading into York Way down to one lane early enough. It narrows, already, to one lane once it reaches the bus stops in York Way, so it is perverse not to narrow it before the junction, thus freeing up space for a cycle lane to take cyclists safely through the junction.

  • How to design cycle routes crossing main roads with a dog-leg

    It is likely a cycle route will run south from Packington St. I was just thinking how it could be continued north/west crossing Essex Rd, down Gaskin St, crossing Upper St and into Theberton St. At the moment, the main roads get quite busy and present a barrier to cycling.

    Assuming Gaskin St can be made two way, I was wandering what the best design would be to make the links on Essex Rd and Upper St safest for cyclists (bearing in mind this would ideally be a quiet route).

    Are there best practice examples of similar situations elsewhere?

  • Consultation on: HS2 Phase 1 environmental statement | Camden Town and HS1 Link

    HS2 are consulting on a report on the environmental impact caused by the link following the Overground route between HS1 (on York Way near St Pancras station) and where it joins the mainline near to Adelaide Road.
    They will be working for a period of seven years, starting in 2017, altering or rebuilding all the bridges and adding track to the viaducts
    The main depot is on Camley Street at the foot of the Agar-Camley Link, another depot is at junction of Royal College Street and Camden Road.

  • TfL Consultation: Proposed improvements at the Nag’s Head on A1 Holloway Road

    A1 Holloway Road - Nag's Head
    Overview
    Transport for London (TfL) has developed proposals to improve road safety for pedestrians and cyclists on the A1 Holloway Road in the Nag’s Head area.

    The main objective of the scheme is to put in place a pedestrian crossing on the A1 Holloway Road, enabling people to cross the road easily and safely and to improve access to businesses on the south-western side of the road.

    In summary, the proposed measures include the following:

    New signalised pedestrian crossing outside the Nag’s Head Shopping Centre

    New cycle lanes in both directions

    Advanced stop lines added to the junctions of Holloway Road and Tollington Road/Camden Road and Seven Sisters/Parkhurst Road

    Resurfacing of the footway and carriageway
    In order to make space for these improvements some other changes are required. These include

    Relocation of the northbound bus stop (Stop L) approximately 50m north of its existing location

    Changes to parking and loading provision, with and overall slight reduction in parking and loading availability

    Loss of one small tree on the median island where the crossing will be located. There may also be the potential loss of one other small tree and two relatively mature trees due to kerb cutbacks required in order to relocate the bus stop.

    Relocation of several items of street furniture including the removal of a redundant telephone box
    The proposals are shown on the attached map. In addition to these proposals, an informal pedestrian crossing with a central refuge island is planned for the A1 Holloway Road adjacent to Jackson Road.

    All of the measures that we propose are subject to change as a result of this consultation. Given no unforeseen issues, it is anticipated that the scheme will be implemented in Spring 2014.

  • Progressing the LCC 2014 election campaign 'asks'

    This issue is intended to act a repository for material that can be used to back-up the LCC's 2014 Local Election Campaign 'Asks'. There are 6 'asks' that were finalised and agreed at the LCC's AGM on 19 October 2013:

    1. Safe routes to schools
    2. Areas without through motor traffic (AWTTs)
    3. Protected space on main roads/major junctions
    4. Safe cycle routes via parks and canals (Greenways)
    5. 20mph speed limits
    6. Liveable town centres

    so we'll have 6 threads under this Cyclescape issue where we can collect explanations, discussions and most importantly concrete illustrations of what is meant by each ask.

  • Clerkenwell Boulevard

    Here is an ambitious plan for a Bicycle Boulevard from Shoreditch to Fitzrovia, along Old Street, Clerkenwell Road and Theobalds Road, open only to bicycles, buses and motor traffic for local access only.
    a. It is now the most cycled route in London, showing that it is the desired EW route.
    b. It is of variable width, therefore trying to accommodate bikes, buses, and through traffic in a consistent and safe way is impossible. In other words, a compromise will be a botch job.
    c. There will not be mixing of buses and bicycles: bicycles will have a dedicated two way cycle lane on the South side of the street.
    d. The Boulevard stops being a mega- EW-rat-run. Motor traffic will have to use Pentonville/City Road.

  • 'Quick Wins' - minor cycling infrastructure improvements in Camden

    Camden officers have indicated that they would like to receive prioritised list of suggestions for (very) minor improvements throughout the borough that will make cyclists feel better catered for. Examples of changes that will be considered:
    - dropped kerbs
    - obstructive barriers (i.e. anti-motor cycle barriers)
    - stretches of poor road surface (such that you have slow down on a Brompton or weave around holes)
    - Feeders into ASLs that are too short or non-mandatory

    Changes that shouldn't be suggested for this initiative include:
    - anything that would require a local consultation
    - anything that involves changes to parking provision
    - individual pot-holes

    To compile a list, we want suggestions from members. The Council's deadline is Monday November 25th. So can we have members' suggestions by Wednesday November 20th please. That will allow time for us to compile a list and circulate it here for comment.

  • Toucan crossing between Featherstone Street and Leonard Street slow to change

    The toucan crossing for cyclists avoiding Old Street Junction are very slow to change for pedestrians and cyclists. Often people get fed up waiting and then dart across in a gap. Or once there is a gap, it takes until cars start appearing before they change.

    If TfL is seriously interested in encouraging walking and cycling they need to change the timing of these lights so that they don't take forever to change.

  • Pinch point where Clerkenwell Road crosses Farringdon Road

    As a cyclist it's pretty horrible to cycle along Clerkenwell Road due to it being much narrower than it used to be, or could be due to the ultra wide pavements.

    West bound there is a bit of 2 lane queuing preventing cyclists getting past. Eastbound just before the lights the Island is in the way forcing cyclists to merge with motors.

  • Severn Sisters to Hornsey Rd. right turn problem

    I cycle southwards down Sussex Way each morning, and the logical thing to do is continue down Hornsey Road. Even better would be if this could somehow join onto the nicely cycle provisioned route down Arnette Road. Would make a logical route southwards, but short of bulldozing some shops, I'm not sure how it could be made to join up better.

    So anyway I go down Hornsey Road, but the weird thing is I'm not allowed to turn right from Severn Sisters Rd to Horsey Road. It's weird because there's a little strip of cycle lane on Severn Sisters Road leading into this junction, which would very much imply that the highway planners are expecting cyclists to do this. Maybe there should be a blue 'except cyclists' sign there.... except that cyclists need to avoid running over the pedestrians who are crossing at that time in the traffic light sequence.

    I'm actually not sure what can be done to improve this. Maybe someone else can think of something.
